The holidays can be triggering for those grieving a loved one. CaringMatters CEO Allison Stearns offers advice on how to create new traditions and enjoy the holidays.
While the holidays are supposed to be joyful, it’s often difficult to be happy when someone you love is struggling or no longer here.
It is okay for someone to choose to be alone or attend a party during the holidays, according to Stearns. There is no right or wrong way to grieve. People are working on their new norm, which may include establishing new traditions like making a toast or creating a Christmas tree ornament for their loved one.
It is important to be surrounded by people who are understanding and supportive, she added.
Her advice for people whose close friend is grieving is to simply show up for that person. Don’t be afraid to reminisce and talk about a loved one who has passed away. Memories are important, Stearns said.
CaringMatters in Gaithersburg offers multiple support groups for those grieving, including groups for those who lost a loved one to suicide or lost a young child.
