Both Councilmembers Evan Glass and Will Jawando have introduced bills before the county council to delay any action on data centers.
Councilmember Glass held a press conference last week to announce his legislation which would put data centers on a six-month pause.
Citing potential environmental impacts, Glass said, “The urgency is real. Our climate is on the line and these decisions are irreversible. We have to be very prudent in how we move forward.”
In his bill, Councilmember Jawando set forth a longer moratorium of two years.
“Data center projects in Montgomery County, especially the massive site proposed at Dickerson, should not move forward until we have real standards in place. That means 100% clean energy, real protections for residents, and fair taxation,” Jawando said.
Both bills will be under consideration by the council in the first weeks of June.
