Term-limited County Executive Marc Elrich, a democrat and former Montgomery County Public Schools teacher, is leading the county council at-large race with the highest number of votes among candidates, so far. Provisional and mail-in ballots are still being counted and, according to the State Board of Elections, final results may take days if not a few weeks to confirm.
At Will Jawando‘s primary election watch party Tuesday night, MCM asked Elrich about his thoughts on returning to his previous role as a member of the county council. He also reflected on how a newly elected group of councilmembers may impact local politics, his thoughts on November and his excitement for Jawando, who Elrich endorsed and who is currently leading the Democratic primary to replace him as Montgomery’s next county executive.
Elrich is currently term-limited following the 2024 election when voters chose to limit the county executive position to two terms, instead of the previous three. Elrich has served on the county council for 12 years from 2006-2018 before he became County Executive.
There are four at-large council seats open.
