Newly released bodycam footage from the officer-involved shooting in Gaithersburg provides new information on what led to the fatal standoff between a civilian and law enforcement on Sunday, July 12.

The Maryland Office of the Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division continues to investigate the incident that occurred on Lost Knife Road that resulted in suspect Elliott Powers being shot by police.

Authorities released the bodycam footage from the shooting on Friday, August 7. In the footage, officers ask the suspect to drop his weapon, to which Powers replies “I ain’t dropping nothing.” An officer replies, “I don’t want to hurt you.” Powers responds, “Hurt me.”

Roughly 10 minutes into the video, Powers repeatedly tells the cops to kill him, and when an officer says, “We don’t want to do that.” Powers responds with “I want you to. That’s why I’m here.”

The situation eventually escalates to a shooting between officers and Powers leading to Powers’ death.

The investigation is ongoing. MCM will update the story as more information becomes available.
