A Sherwood High School staff member is recovering after coworkers saved his life during a cardiac arrest this week.
The Sherwood staffer went into cardiac arrest Monday. It happened during dismissal on MCPS’s Transition Day for incoming freshmen, according to Dr. Earl Stoddard, director of the county’s Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security. Freshmen were not in the room when the medical event happened.
School staff performed CPR. They used an automated external defibrillator until fire and rescue crews arrived, Stoddard said. Their actions brought the staff member out of cardiac arrest.
Stoddard joined MCPS Superintendent Thomas Taylor Tuesday morning to thank the staff involved in resuscitating their colleague.
“I just wanted to recognize the people who acted so heroically on the first day of school,” Stoddard said at County Executive Marc Elrich’s weekly media briefing Wednesday. He thanked the first responders who “heroically responded.” He also thanked the MCPS staff who “jumped in and helped their fellow coworker” and “saved his life.”
The staff member is expected to make a full recovery, Stoddard said.
