Applications Now Open For Councilmember Sayles’ Youth Advisory Council

Montgomery County Councilmember Laurie-Anne Sayles is seeking applicants for the second cohort of her S.M.A.R.T. Youth Advisory Council.

The S.M.A.R.T. Youth Advisory Council is aimed to increase youth civic engagement. Applicants must be Montgomery County residents, in grades 7-12 and older than 13.

Students must commit to meeting in person and virtually every two weeks on Mondays at 5:30 p.m. from September through December.

Participants will focus on Sayles’ S.M.A.R.T. agenda, which includes:

  • Strengthening 21st century learning from cradle to career and beyond.
  • Making living in Montgomery County more affordable.
  • Advancing sustainable local food production in the Agricultural Reserve.
  • Revitalizing the economy while recovering from the pandemic.
  • Tackling climate change through multi-modal transportation infrastructure.

“Young people have always been vocal advocates for change throughout history,” Sayles said in a press release announcing the applications. “I aim to inspire future generations to turn their frustrations and ideas into solving tomorrow’s problems by getting involved in their local government, thinking critically about today’s challenges, and, most importantly, working with their peers to develop solutions to our County’s challenges.”

Applications for the S.M.A.R.T. Youth Advisory Council are due on August 28 and can be found here.
