Education and Community Engagement’s April Wrap-Up

Montgomery Community Media believes in empowering individuals and communities through media education and engagement. In the month of April, the Education and Community Engagement department hosted several events for community members to enhance their media and communication skills. Here is a wrap-up of our April events:

Intro to Video hosted by Harvey Nunes

ECE hosted a class that introduced the basics of videography, taught by media expert and owner of BrandNuMediaGroup, Harvey Nunes.

Participants learned the settings and functions of a camera, how to manipulate camera settings to achieve high quality video, how to record themselves and others, as well as how to gain clientele.

Participants enjoyed learning from Nunes and were able to get hands-on experience with equipment so they can begin creating their own video material right away.

Senior Smart with Girl Scouts

Local Girl Scouts give a presentation on cyber security and internet safety.

MCM collaborated with a local Girl Scout troop and local student volunteers who earned Student Service Learning (SSL) hours by assisting seniors in teaching them how to use their smartphones.

Many senior citizens need a guiding hand to patiently sit with them and show them how to use their phone.

This included how to use FaceTime, text messages, social media, and more. The course also touched on cybersecurity and how to be cyber-smart.

If you are looking to earn SSL hours, register to volunteer with MCM! We are hosting more Senior Smart events this summer.

MCM recognizes the need to improve the public’s trust in the healthcare field. In this course, participants learned the best practices and principles for communicating with the public about health issues.

The webinar taught viewers how to engage with their audience, improve public perception and establish trust. By the end of the webinar, participants walked away with a toolkit of communication tools to be implemented at their organizations.

This webinar was supported by the Healthcare Initiative Foundation (HIF), working to improve health and wellness outcomes for all who reside in Montgomery County Maryland.

Community Programming: Takoma Park Youth Media Academy

As part of our Youth Media Academy, Takoma Park Middle School students continued working on their final project: a variety show titled Rahel Reports. The show is created, produced, and directed by the students.

Filled with honest interviews and engaging segments, the episode will air on channel 19 as well as our YouTube channel to showcase the students’ vision and hard work.

Keep an eye on our social media for more details on the final project!
