Backlash continues over a proposal from Montgomery County Public Schools that would permanently move Rockville’s Wootton High School student body to Gaithersburg’s new Crown High School.
While many families are focused on keeping Wootton at Wootton, others are focused on making sure their kids can attend the new Crown High School, or like Gaithersburg Councilmember Yamil Hernández told MCM last week, “I think we, in the city, we’re committed behind any option that opens Crown High School as a permanent high school.”
The Gaithersburg Councilmember’s position differs from that of the Rockville mayor and council, who are against the idea of moving Wootton to Crown.
“With Crown on the horizon, we were all very much looking forward to being a part of the school that is literally on the same street as our elementary school,” Erin Ulloa, PTA vice president at Fields Road Elementary School, told MCM earlier this month. She said the latest boundary options push families like hers out to Gaithersburg High School.
MCM previously reported when the Wootton cluster community rallied outside the school board building in support of keeping the students in place at their current campus.
This issue has dominated testimony at recent school board meetings, including last week’s meeting.
Under this particular boundary study option—known as “Option H”—Wootton would turn into a holding school for other campuses under construction.
The superintendent is expected to announce a recommendation in February.
