One day after being confirmed by the U.S. Senate, Attorney General Merrick Garland of Bethesda was sworn in Thursday by Vice President Kamala Harris.
He then addressed the 115,000 U.S. Department of Justice employees, the great majority who listened virtually. Garland said he was excited to return to the department, where he has served under five attorney generals.
“Public service is more than a job. it is a calling,” he said. “I, too, know this department has and always has had such dedicated people. I am honored to work with you,” Garland told the federal employees. “Together we will show the American people by word and deed that the Department of Justice pursues equal justice and adheres to the rule of law.”
