Bethesda’s Contemporary Art Exhibit Opens Sept. 7

The Annual Trawick Contemporary Art Awards exhibit opens Sept. 7 at Gallery B in Downtown Bethesda. The exhibit recognizes talented visual artists from Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. Local business owner and community activist Carol Trawick founded the juried art awards in 2003.

The artwork is on exhibit from Sept. 7 through Oct. 1 at Gallery B which is located at 7700 Wisconsin Avenue, Suite E. The gallery hours for the exhibit will be Thursday-Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. Meet the artists on Friday, Sept. 8 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the exhibit opening reception.

Eight regional artists were chosen by a jury as the finalists in this year’s competition.

The 2023 Trawick Prize finalists:

  • Kei Ito, Baltimore
  • Megan Koeppel, Hyattsville, Md.

The winners of the competition will be announced on Sept. 2. The top three artists will receive $10,000, $2,000 and $1,000 awards. A prize of $1,000 will go to an artist who is younger than 30.

The 2023 Trawick Prize jurors are Brandon Morse, Associate Professor and Chair of the Art Department, University of Maryland; Jon-Phillip Sheridan, Chair of the Photography and Film, Virginia Commonwealth University; and Naoco Wowsugi, Associate Professor of Art, American University.

The regional competition is one of the largest prizes to annually honor visual artists. Carol Trawick, a longtime community activist in downtown Bethesda, founded the competition in 2003.
