Code Red: Try to Limit Time Outdoors

Due to the poor air quality caused by wildfires in Canada, Montgomery County Public School officials and other agencies advise staying indoors, if possible.

Thursday is considered a Code Red day, meaning the air is unhealthy for all. Smoke from the Canadian fires continues to contribute to increased levels of fine particle pollution.

Individuals in sensitive health groups should avoid outdoor physical activities, and employees should limit outdoor work, especially if it is strenuous.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) advises everyone to “take it easier during smoky times. If you can see or smell smoke, avoid strenuous activities like lawn mowing or jogging.”

Residents can check current air quality conditions on COG’s website or the Clean Air Partners website, according to Takoma Park police.

The EPA also suggests people limit their time outdoors and take frequent breaks indoors. An N95 respirator mask should be worn if working outdoors.

Other suggestions include using gas or electric grills instead of charcoal, filling up your car’s gas tank after sunset, and taking mass transit or working from home.
