Council Votes for Lactation Rooms, Paid Parental Leave for County Employees

Councilmembers and other leaders during a June 14 press conference to introduce the two bills.

On Tuesday, the Montgomery County Council passed two bills that aim to help county employees.

Councilmember Andrew Friedson introduced the bills last month.  One provides six weeks of paid parental leave at 100% salary for county employees, and the other requires all county buildings to have a lactation room or alternate accommodation.

Both bills passed unanimously.

“It’s really part of county government, as a large employer, really trying to model the type of family-friendly policies that we should be implementing,” Friedson said during Tuesday’s council meeting.

“I think both of these efforts will help us retain and attract great talent that we need and it will also allow us to provide better services to our residents,” he said.
