Two-term At-Large Councilmember Gabe Albornoz announced Monday on Facebook that he will not seek re-election to the Montgomery County Council in 2026.

Here is what the Facebook post said:

“After a great deal of consideration, I have decided not to seek a third term on the County Council. Serving the county that I love and have proudly called home my entire life has truly been an honor. It has been both humbling and deeply meaningful to represent this community as an elected official, and I am profoundly grateful for the trust, support, and work achieved over the past two terms.”

Albornoz focused on issues of social equity and health and human services. He chaired the Health and Human Services and Education and Culture Committees.

Before he was elected to public office, Albornoz served as director of recreation under County Executive Ike Leggett. Prior to that, he chaired the county Democratic Central Committee.

Following the campaigns for County Executive by his fellow At-Large members Evan Glass and Will Jawando, his departure from the race leaves three of the four At-Large seats open. At-Large Councilmember Laurie-Anne Sayles announced that she will run for re-election in March.
