UPDATE: The program at the Button Farm Living History Center in Germantown is canceled due to rain.

Montgomery County will host a special program Saturday, May 13, at the Button Farm Living History Center in Germantown to remember and celebrate the life of Harriet Tubman.

The centerpiece of the program, ‘Journey to Freedom History Day,” is a 9-foot tall sculpture by Wesley Wofford depicting Harriet Tubman as she guides a child to freedom on the Underground Railroad. Tubman was born into slavery in Dorchester County in Maryland and escaped to Philadelphia in 1849. She journeyed back to Maryland several times to rescue her family and about 70 others from slavery.

The Button Farm welcomed the statue of Harriet Tubman on April 1 and it will remain on exhibit until May 30. The Menare Foundation Inc. and Heritage Montgomery are host to the statue. This is the first time the statue has been on exhibit in the Washington metropolitan area since it was launched on a nationwide tour in 2020.

Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich will speak at the free event, which is being presented by the Montgomery County Office of Human Rights, the Menare Foundation Inc., Heritage Montgomery, and Montgomery History.

Saturday’s program takes place from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. The Button Farm Living History Center is located at 16820 Black Rock Road in Germantown. Visit the Button Farm website to learn more.
