County still receiving federal childcare funds

Montgomery County officials have not been alerted to any decrease in federal funding for its childcare programs.

The Trump Administration recently announced cutbacks and restrictions on federal childcare funding in connection with fraud allegations at centers in Minnesota. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services cut off some funds to centers there.

“Based on our recent updates from the program, there was no indication that there has been any changes,” said Dr. Oscar Mensah, social services officer with the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services.

Any cuts would go through the Child Care Development Fund, which funds state childcare scholarships, quality improvements and licensing operations.

There is, however, a current freeze in the county’s Working Parents Assistance Program concerning new applications for children six years and older. County staff personnel are reviewing applications for eligibility of families who are on the waitlist.

Maryland serves 45,000 children through its childcare subsidies program.
