Welcome to MCM’s Weekend Roundup of entertainment in Montgomery County. Here are nine things to do this weekend, December 22-24.

Friday, December 22

Ice and Lights Festival: Enjoy music, light shows, ice skating, arts, and local food and drink at Veteran’s Plaza in Silver Spring on Friday, Dec. 22. All ages are welcome.  Reservations are available through the ActiveMontgomery website.

The Nutcracker: The Maryland Youth Ballet presents three performances of The Nutcracker this weekend at the Robert E. Parilla Performing Arts Center. Tickets start at $28. The Arts Center is located at 51 Mannakee Street on the Montgomery College Rockville campus. For more information and to purchase tickets, click here. Performances are Thursday and Friday at 7 p.m., Saturday at 1 and 5 p.m.

The Hip Hop Nutcracker: Strathmore presents this modern-day adaptation of Tchaikovsky’s classic score set in modern-day New York City. Three performances through Friday, Dec. 22. Tickets range from $28 – $68 with limited availability. Performances are Thursday, Dec. 21 at 2 and 8 p.m., Friday, Dec. 22 at 8 p.m. For more information and to purchase tickets, click here.

Saturday, December 23

A Christmas Carol: The Charles Dickens classic tale has been adapted and stars Paul Morella. Now in the 14th year at the Olney Theatre, this play has become a favorite Christmas tradition for many theater goers. The plan runs from now through Dec. 31 at various times. Wheaton Holiday Market:   Local entrepreneurs will sell their artisan gifts Saturday, Dec. 23 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Marian Fryer Town Plaza. For more information and to register, click here. The plaza is located at 2424 Reedie Drive in Wheaton.

Sounds of the Season:  Bring the family and strolling carolers and stage performances by local student groups at the rio lakefront in Gaithersburg. Sounds of the Season takes place Saturday, Dec. 23 starting at noon. For more information and directions, click here.

Sunday, December 24

Takoma Park Farmers Market: The market operates every Sunday year-round from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. located in the parking lot behind the shops on Laurel Avenue next to Truist Bank. Fresh local produce, breads, pasture raised meats, artisan cheese, eggs, baked goods and more from farms are featured each week at the marked. A Magical Christmas Eve: The D.C. Temple presents an inspirational Christmas Eve program at 7 p.m. in the Visitors’ Center. The Temple is located in Kensington at 9900 Stoneybrook Drive. The annual Festival of Lights continues through Jan. 1, 2024 this year. For more information, click here.

Bethesda Central Farm Market: The market is open year-round on Sundays and features table seating, music, local Maryland winery and farm brewery tastings, kids club activities, and chef demos. The market is located at Bethesda Elementary School,  at 7600 Arlington Road. Free parking is available at two nearby county garages, St. Elmo and Woodmont Corner Garages.
