Department of Environmental Protection Offering Compost Bins to Residents

The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is offering compost bins with food scraps to County residents who receive their recycling services from Montgomery County.

Residents can register to receive a food scraps compost bin to start their own compost bins at home. Those interested can register online and choose between two compost bins. There is a limited supply of food scraps compost bins available for pick up. Registration is on a first come, first serve basis.

Bins can be picked up at the Upcounty Regional Services Center in Germantown on April 30 between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Bins can also be picked up on May 6 at Blair High School in Silver Spring between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Registration is required to pick up a bin.

DEP is testing two types of composting bins designed for recycling certain types of food scraps. Residents can indicate which composting bins they would like and then report their efforts back to DEP.
