Throughout March, we honor the contributions, resilience, and triumphs of women who have shaped history in profound ways.

This event guide serves to highlight the many programs and events commemorating Women’s History Month throughout Montgomery County.

Saturday, March 2

People’s Book Presents Tiffany Jewel: The People’s Book features a conversation with author Tiffany Jewell and Liz Kleinrock Saturday, March 2 from 4 to 5 p.m. Jewell’s book Everything I Learned About Racism I Learned in School focuses on the experiences Black and Brown students face by the racism built into school systems across the country. Sunday, March 3

Unstoppabold with Lululemon and Sarge Athletics: Join Lululemon and Sarge Athletics for a complimentary fitness class and lecture. Bridgette from Sarge Athletics leads a 30 minute fitness class followed by a 30 minute talk on wellness. This event takes place Sunday, March 3 at Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda. Tuesday, March 5

Making Herstory Women in STEM: The Central Michigan University presents this virtual review of female scientists, like late-blooming Rachel Holloway Lloyd, rulebreaker Marie Curie, Mildred Cohn and Gerty Cori. This lecture for older adults takes place virtually Tuesday, March 5 at 11 a.m. Fee is $9. Learn more and register here.

Wednesday, March 6

Women in STEM Hands-On Activities and Demonstrations: Middle and high school students are invited to meet women scientists in person to learn about their work Wednesday, March 6 at 6:30 p.m. at Casey Community Center in Gaithersburg. There will be hands-on activities and demonstrations. Free. The Casey Community Center is located at 810 South Frederick Avenue. Space is limited. Learn more and reserve a spot, here.

Thursday, March 7

History Hour with Dr. Iyelli Ichile: Montgomery Park’s History Hour series for adult audiences continues Thursday, March 7 with a presentation by Dr. Iyelli Ichile who is the Director of African American Studies Institute at Prince George’s Community College. Dr. Ichile will talk about the role women played in the struggle against American slavery. Tickets are $5 and are available onsite. This program will take place at the Josiah Henson Museum and Park visitor center located at 11410 Old Georgetown Road in North Bethesda. Learn more and purchase tickets here.

Friday, March 8

“Celebrate the Feminine” Art Exhibit: Bethesda Urban Partnership presents an exhibit for Women’s History Month with artwork by artist Deborah CC LaCroix from Friday, March 8 through Sunday, March 31 in Gallery B. Meet LaCroix at the opening reception Friday, March 8 from 6-9 p.m., with special gallery hours of 4-8 p.m. There will be an Artist Talk on Saturday, March 23 at 2 p.m. Gallery B is located in downtown Bethesda at 7700 Wisconsin Avenue, Suite E. Gallery hours: Friday and Saturday, noon-5 p.m. and Sunday, 11 a.m.- 2 p.m. Free. Learn more here.

Tour the Clara Barton National Historic Site: Clara Barton is remembered for dedicating her life to helping those in need and founding the American Red Cross. She provided medical care to soldiers during the Civil War. The Clara Barton National Historic Site is the first national historic site dedicated to the accomplishments of a woman. Free guided tours of the first floor of the home are available on the hour from 1-4 p.m., Friday-Sunday. The site is located at 5801 Oxford Road in Glen Echo. Learn more here.

Saturday, March 16

Tasty Books Ada Twist, Scientist: The Tasty Books series features the children’s book Ada Twist, Scientist Saturday, March 16 at 10:30 a.m. Children ages 2 to 8 listen to the story of Ada Twist read aloud and then explore hands-on crafts and snacks. The event takes place at the Casey Community Center. Adult supervision required. Individual tickets need to be purchased for each child and adult. Tickets cost $5. Tuesday, March 19

Women in the NFL: The Pro Football Hall of Fame presents this virtual review of women in the NFL. Learn about a multitude of women who have had a significant impact on and off the field. The lecture takes place virtually Tuesday, March 19 at 11 a.m. for older adults. Fee is $9. Learn more and register here.

Monday, March 25

Honoring Trailblazers Clarissa Harlowe Barton & Olive Dennis: The city of Rockville presents this virtual review of two women from Maryland for Women’s History Month. Clarissa Harlowe Barton was an educator and humanitarian best known for founding the American Red Cross. Olive Dennis was the first women to earn a civil engineering degree from Cornell and changed travel by rail.  The lecture takes place virtually Monday, March 25 at 10:30 a.m. for older adults.
