Friday, February 16

BHM24 Friday Night Dance Series: The Maryland Youth Ballet hosts numerous events during February to observe Black History Month. On Friday nights from 7:30-9 p.m. youth ages 10 and up may participate in a complementary African dance lesson. The lesson tonight focuses on a  style of dance originating predominantly from Sub-Saharan Africa known as Afrobeats taught by Heinz Adjakwah. Afrobeats music is anchored in West African music styles, particularly Nigerian Afrobeat and Ghanaian high life, with American jazz, funk, reggae and dance hall added to the mix, creating a hybrid sound from across continents. Popovich Comedy Pet Theater: The Las Vagas based Popovich Comedy Pet Theater is on tour and making a stop in at the F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre in Rockville Friday, Feb. 16 at 7 p.m. Tickets start at $30. The F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre is located at 603 Edmonston Drive. Rose & Rumba Dance Class and Open House: The Silver Spring Arthur Murray Dance Studio presents a free beginners Rumba & Salsa group class followed by a supervised dance party Friday at 7 p.m.  Free, but registration is requested. Saturday, February 17

A Salsa Cinderella Fairytale: Imagination Stage in Bethesda presents this bilingual Cinderalla tale with a twist. The musical breaks new ground in bilingual children’s theater. Lunar New Year:  Celebrate the Year of the Dragon with the Chinese Youth Club Lion Dance Team at the Potomac Library, Saturday, Feb 17 at 11 a.m. The library is located at 10101 Glenolden Drive. Appropriate for all ages. For more information, click here.

Rockville Lunar New Year: The city of Rockville celebrates Lunar New Year with performances, interactive displays, kids’ crafts, and to-go snack boxes (while supplies last) Saturday, Feb. 17 at Rockville High School from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Organized in partnership with Rockville’s Asian Pacific American Task Force. Sunday, February 18

Cultural Heritage Concert Series: The county is hosting a series of four concerts during February to celebrate Black History Month. Today’s concert takes place at the Plum Gar Community Recreation Center in Germantown at 1 p.m. Performing Artists: Miles Spicer and Franklyn Johnson-Williams. Free and appropriate for all ages. MoCo Lore with Janice the Griot: Sandy Spring Museum presents Janice the Griot Sunday, Feb. 18 from 3-5 p.m. Master storyteller Janice Curtis Greene, performing as Janice the Griot, tells stories about the historical Sandy Spring Black community. She is accompanied by apprentice storyteller Carla McEachern. The program will also feature a facilitated discussion and a Q & A about the presenters’ process. $10 general admission, $8 museum member. The Sandy Spring Museum is located at 17901 Bentley Road. Animals in Winter: At the Locust Grove Nature Center, families are invited to learn about how different animals survive and thrive in the cold winter months through self guided activities and programs on the weekends from now through Feb. 29.
