Former Commanders Players Visit Flag Football Players in Wheaton

Former Washington Commanders players visited young athletes in Wheaton to show their support over the weekend.

As flag football leagues under the county’s Recreation Department get ready to wrap up for the season, on Sunday former Commanders players Rocky McIntosh (2006-2011) and Marcus Smith (2018) were at Wheaton High School to cheer the players on.

The team’s mascot Major Tuddy and members from the Washington Commanders Command Force dance/entertainment team were also there to support.

468 young athletes enrolled this season, including 84 girls, according to the Recreation Department.

Sunday’s players were in the 12 and under and 14U co-ed leagues, plus the 14U girls’ league. The county’s recreation department offers youth leagues for ages 6-14 each fall and spring.

Last year, Montgomery County Public Schools introduced girls’ flag football as a varsity sport at all high schools. MCPS does the program in partnership with the Commanders and the Baltimore Ravens.

In August, the Commanders announced a more than $1 million contribution for girls’ flag football in the DMV including Montgomery County. Also that month, four Montgomery County high school girls’ flag football teams were featured during a Commanders-Cincinnati Bengals preseason football game.
