The Washington Capitals are looking to introduce ice hockey to girls ages 4-9 in Montgomery County at no cost.
DMV Girls Holiday Weekend is part of USA Hockey’s Try Hockey for Free program, giving local girls the chance to experience hockey during a free one- to two-hour ice session. All required equipment is provided by the local youth hockey organization.
The Montgomery Ice Devils at Rockville Ice Arena are one of the participating clubs hosting the free event on Sept. 12-13.
This event is for players who have never tried hockey before to gear up and give it a shot in a fun and safe environment.
There has also been significant growth in hockey participation in the Washington, D.C., area since Alex Ovechkin was drafted, according to USA Hockey. Ovechkin was the first overall pick in the 2004 NHL Draft. The total number of USA Hockey-registered youth and adult players in D.C. has climbed by more than 220% from 2005-06 through 2025-26.
