Gaithersburg Man Dies Following Vehicle Crash After First Refusing Medical Care

After denying medical care, a Gaithersburg man died from injuries he sustained in a vehicle collision.

Edwin Portillo, 44, died one day after the collision on Jan. 8 at the intersection of Watkins Mill Road and Crested Iris Drive in Gaithersburg, according to Montgomery County Police.

When police and Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services responded to the crash, which involved two vehicles, the drivers of both vehicles denied medical care, police said.

Less than four hours later, rescue personnel responded to the 19300 block of Montgomery Village Avenue after receiving a call for an unresponsive person. Originally, Montgomery County Police Homicide Division investigated this case as a sudden death. Portillo was pronounced dead on Jan. 9.

Following further investigation, police determined the victim had been involved in the collision in Gaithersburg on Jan. 8.
