Gov. Wes Moore endorses Jawando, three more candidates for June 23 primary

Gov. Wes Moore announced 26 new endorsements for the June 23 Maryland Democratic Primary Friday evening that include four Montgomery County candidates for public office.

Moore endorsed Councilmember Will Jawando for County Executive, who is running against fellow Councilmembers Andrew Friedson and Evan Glass, in addition to Mithun Banerjee, Peter James, Shelly Skolnick and Esther Wells.

“We have delivered enormous progress for the people of Maryland since taking office, but there is still more work to do, and these are the community leaders across the state who will help us finish the job,”said Governor Wes Moore in a statement. “In order to continue record drops in violent crime, keep lowering costs for Maryland families, and make our schools even stronger I need a team that will work day and night to build a Maryland that leaves no one behind. Alongside on another we will continue the work to ensure this is Maryland’s decade.”

Moore also endorsed Montgomery County Council At-Large candidate Scott Goldberg.

“Marylanders we may never meet in our lifetimes will be affected by the actions we take, or fail to take, in the next four years,” Goldberg said in a statement. “The ethos of Leave No One Behind doesn’t have a timeline and if future generations cannot afford to live here, it’s our responsibility to make sure that they can and our fault if they can’t. Governor Moore understands this and I cannot wait to tackle this challenge head on, together.”

Goldberg’s competition for the At-Large seat includes sitting County Executive Marc Elrich, who has reach term limit for his role, incumbent Laurie-Ann Sayles, in addition to current Board of Education Member Karla Silvestre. Additional at-large council candidates include Fatmata Barrie, Josie Caballero, Radwan Chowdhury, Dana Eugene Gassaway, Hamza Khan, Matt Losak, Jim McNulty, Jeremiah Pope, Prabu Selvam, Steve Solomon, Lelia B. TrueMuhammad Arif Wali and Sherwin Wells.

District 1 candidate Drew Morrison also secured an endorsement from the governor.

“I am honored to have Governor Moore’s endorsement. The Governor is a bold leader and exactly what our state and local communities need,” Morrison said in a statement. “I have been proud to work with him on key priorities like advancing job creation and building housing near transit. I will bring that same focus to the County Council to partner with Governor Moore as we make our community more affordable and rebuild Montgomery County’s economy in the wake of federal cuts.”

Morrison is running against Debbie Spielberg, sitting Board of Education Member Julie Yang, and Reardon “Sully” Sullivan, a Republican.

For school board, Moore endorsed District 3 candidate Sally McCarthy. McCarthy is running against Sharon Creed, Brett Di Resta, Andrew Frykman and Cassandra “Cassi” Sung.
