Heading into Title Game, Michigan Bolstered by Local Players

Michigan is on the verge of their first national championship since 1997. The Wolverines beat Alabama 27-20 in overtime in the Rose Bowl Monday to advance to the national championship game against Washington (14-0) on Monday, Jan. 8 at 7:30 p.m.

The Wolverines have several players from the DMV on their roster including two key contributors on defense from Montgomery County.

Kris Jenkins (#94) is a starting defensive tackle for the Wolverines. The 6’3″, 305 lb senior from Olney is an alum of Good Counsel High School where he also ran track and was part of the choir. Jenkins had two tackles and a sack against Alabama.

Jenkins’ coach at Good Counsel Andy Stefanelli told MCM, “It’s a thrill. I feel like a proud parent. It’s an honor to have had a hand in helping a kid get in the position to try and win a national championship.” Stefaneli said in high school, Jenkins was “incredibly strong” earning the nickname The Mutant from his strength coach. Stefanelli described Jenkins as “humble” and an “outstanding kid” whose “fun-loving spirit was contagious.”

Silver Spring native Quinten Johnson (#28) is a 5’11”, 200 lb safety and an alum of St. John’s College High School in Washington, DC.

The graduate student had a key forced fumble in the 4th quarter of the Alabama game.
