‘I Have Some Really Good News’: Rockville Resident Wins $50,000 in Powerball

A Rockville man became $50,000 richer playing Powerball when he and his wife picked up their winnings at Maryland Lottery Headquarters in Baltimore recently.

The Jan. 30 Powerball drawing did not produce a jackpot winner but the 56-year-old Rockville man was one of 37 people to win $50,000 across the country. The information technology specialist purchased 5 chances to win at the Courthouse Exxon in Rockville.

The man did not watch the Powerball drawing Monday night, but discovered he won by checking online Tuesday during a break at work. He texted his wife, “I have some really good news.”

At home after work, he told his wife about the winnings. The parents of three told lottery officials they will save some of the windfall but first they plan to help a friend in need.

They both agreed, “It’s important when you have a financial blessing, to bless someone else. We know someone who is really in need right now.”

Maryland allows lottery winners to remain anonymous.

The Exxon in Rockville will receive a $500 bonus from the Lottery for selling the winning ticket.

Since Saturday’s Powerball drawing did not produce a jackpot winner, Monday’s jackpot grew to and estimated at $747 million. The drawing takes place Monday, Feb. 6 at 10:59 p.m. E.T.
