Initial Unemployment Claims Rise by Nearly 10%

Initial claims for unemployment filed by Montgomery County residents rose by 156 claims or 9.5%. During the week that ended Nov. 14, 1,797 residents filed initial claims. The prior week, which ended Nov. 7, 1,641 Montgomery County residents had filed initial claims, according to the Maryland Department of Labor (DOL).

Statewide, the number of initial claims filed last week increased by 1,186 or 6.9%.  During the week that ended Nov. 14, 18,440 Marylanders filed initial claims for unemployment. The previous week that ended Nov. 7, 17,254 Marylanders filed initial claims for unemployment. During the week that ended Oct. 31, 18,383 Marylanders had filed initial unemployment claims.

According to the DOL, the state added 10,200 jobs and the unemployment rate increased to 7.8% in October. This information is based on the preliminary survey data released Friday by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics.
