Linden Oak Bench, Artist Featured at Kennedy Center Festival

Vale did onsite wood carving demonstrations last weekend as part of the festival.

Olney-based chainsaw artist Colin Vale, who transformed a 300-year-old Linden Oak tree into a bench, will do wood carving demonstrations this weekend at a Kennedy Center festival.

Also, the bench sculpture carved from the 300-year-old tree in North Bethesda will be on display. Vale, also known as Carving Colin, unveiled the bench in December at Ken-Gar Palisades Local Park in Kensington.

The Linden Oak tree was taken down last year due to failing health, according to Montgomery Parks. It was located at Rockville Pike and Beach Drive. Experts believe the champion tree stood since the nation’s founding, according to Parks.

The Kennedy Center’s REACH to FOREST festival “explores the symbiotic relationship between forests and the human world with two weeks of free programs, films, art installations, conversations, and more,” according to the center’s website.

On Saturday and Sunday at 11 a.m., Vale will do carving demonstrations outdoors at the River Pavilion.

The festival started last week and Sunday is the last day.
