Metro Announces Partial Red Line Shutdown This Weekend

Metro’s Red Line rail service will not operate between Grosvenor and Shady Grove stations this weekend (Dec. 9-10) for scheduled maintenance. Metro will close the Shady Grove, Rockville, Twinbrook and North Bethesda stations.

During the shutdown, Metro will install radio and fiber-optic cable to keep cellular service connected and help with two-way communications for the Metro Transit Police Department.

Red Line service between Glenmont and Grosvenor stations will operate normally this weekend.

Shuttle buses will be available to transport riders between the closed stations. There will be express shuttles to and from Grosvenor and Shady Grove stations and local shuttles with service to all stations.

Ride On bus service will temporarily relocate the following bus bays:

  • Twinbrook (West Side of Station):
Bus bays B and C will be reserved for shuttles.
Ride On Route 5 will be moved from bus bay B to bus bay A, shared with Ride On Route 46.
  • Shady Grove (East Side of Station):
Bus bays E and F will be reserved for shuttles.
Ride On Route 100 will be moved from bus bay E to bus bay A.
Ride On Routes 61 and 78 will be moved from bus bay F to bus bay B.

Metro is also planning to close some Red Line stations for two weeks starting Monday, Dec. 18.

Normal Red Line service will resume, and all stations will reopen by the start of normal service Monday morning, Dec. 11, at 5 a.m.
