Montgomery County High School Athlete of the Week: Pearl Mitchell

This week’s Montgomery County High School Athlete of the Week is Richard Montgomery senior Pearl Mitchell.

Each week throughout the school year, the Montgomery County Sports Hall of Fame partners with Montgomery Community Media to honor an Athlete of the Week from the county’s more than 40 public and private high schools.

Earlier in the school year, Mitchell committed to play Division III softball at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She fields both the catcher and first base positions, primarily.

“When you coach by yourself, it is nice to have experienced players you can turn to provide support to other players and give them advice,” head coach Kelly Callan told MCM. “She is well respected by her teammates and was unanimously nominated as captain this season.”

Before Mitchell dons the Engineers’ uniform, her and her five fellow seniors have one last ride as RMHS Rockets.

The Rockets rank 25th in MaxPreps‘ weekly state leaderboard. They lead the Class 4A North II Division as the only ranked member.

“[Mitchell] holds herself to extremely high standards and understands that her skill is something that constantly needs to be developed and fine-tuned,” Callan said. “If she doesn’t like a hit and a rep in the field, she will not move on until she feels good about it.”

Callan said Mitchell has maintained a weighted GPA of 4.91 while enrolled in the International Baccalaureate (IB) program at RM.

On Wednesday, the Rockets defeated Springbrook 21-0 in dominant fashion. The team has eclipsed 20 runs twice so far this season, beating Winston Churchill a week prior, 22-7.

After first-round playoff losses in each of the last two years, the Rockets hope Mitchell can help them soar higher this time around.
