Montgomery History Presentation Looks at County’s Fiddle and Banjo Traditions

In collaboration with International Music Day which was celebrated on Sunday, Oct. 1, Montgomery History will be releasing its “Old Time Music in Montgomery County: Will Adams and Beyond” presentation to the public.

Starting Monday, Oct. 2, the presentation will be available for free to the public and can be viewed for one week until Monday, Oct. 9.

Originally created in 2021 during the Montgomery County History Conference, the presentation takes an in-depth dive into the fiddle and banjo tradition of Montgomery County throughout its history.

The presentation includes a special focus on the life and music of Will Adams, an African American fiddler from Kensington.

Along with Adams, Jake Blount, a singer-songwriter from D.C., is highlighted in the presentation. Blount specializes in traditional African American music. He is widely known for his abilities when it comes to playing the old-time banjo and fiddle.

Early folk music from the Chesapeake Bay region, modern bluegrass and old-time scenes from Washington D.C. to Baltimore highlight some of the other areas that are covered in Old Time Music in Montgomery County.”
