Muslim Organization Files Complaint Against MCPS Over Teacher Put on Leave

A Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization stated it has filed a discrimination complaint against Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) over a middle school teacher allegedly put on leave due to her pro-Palestinian email signature.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) filed a complaint with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, according to a release Thursday. According to CAIR, the complaint alleges that MCPS placed Argyle Middle School teacher Hajur El-Haggan, who is of Egyptian origin, on administrative leave over her email signature “which expressed support for Palestinians,” per a release from CAIR.

An MCPS spokesperson confirmed that Hajur El-Haggan is on administrative leave.

CAIR plans to hold a press conference Friday outside the school board meeting building to announce the complaint against MCPS.
