New Legislation Would Prohibit Firearms In or Near Public Places

Council President Albornoz during his weekly meeting with the media shared details on the Expedited Bill 21-22, Weapons-Firearms In or Near Places of Public Assembly. The bill will be formally introduced during Tuesday’s Council meeting.

State’s Attorney John McCarthy and Chief of Police Marcus Jones joined Albornoz during the briefing.

Gun related crimes have increased nearly double from last year in the county, said Chief Jones during the virtual meeting.

The bill would prevent an individual from possessing a firearm within 100 yards of a place of public assembly even when the individual has a wear-and-carry permit from the State of Maryland. This restriction would strengthen current County law, which exempts individuals with permits from the restriction against carrying weapons within 100 yards of places of public assembly, according to the Council.

A public hearing on the bill is scheduled on July 26.
