New Online Sportsbook Opens in Maryland

Crab Sports joined the ongoing wave of online sportsbooks in Maryland on July 13. Crab Sports is the 11th mobile/online sportsbook in the state and will compete against national companies such as FanDuel, BetMGM and more.

On July 10, Crab Sports successfully completed a demonstration of their site to the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Staff, subsequently receiving an online sports wagering license. The company pledges on their website, “to be Maryland’s number one local sportsbook.”

The organization will focus merely on the Maryland sports wagering market.

In June 2022, Crab Sports inked a deal with Gaming Innovation Group, an entertainment technology company.

I am delighted to have partnered with Crab Sports,” Richard Brown, CEO of GiG, said in a press release. “We see great potential in Crab Sports excellent team and local approach and we see great potential in Maryland.

Sports betting has been extremely popular in Maryland, contributing over $2.8 million to the state in June, according to the MLG. The state’s sports betting handle reached $254.4 million the past month, despite the fact that June is traditionally a stagnant month on the sports calendar.

Additionally, mobile wagering delivered over 90% of the contributions to the state.

But according to a Maryland Daily Record article, “since Maryland opened to mobile sports betting in November, there has been an increase in calls to the help hotline at The Maryland Center of Excellence on Problem Gambling, said Director Mary Drexler.”

Crab Sports promises that its team will be run by “Maryland people through and through,” according to the company’s Twitter account.
