Moesha Gardener, 27, of North Bethesda, was arrested Friday on charges of falsely reporting a home invasion using an image generated by artificial intelligence.
Montgomery County Police officers responded to a reported burglary in the 5000 block of McGrath Boulevard in North Bethesda Wednesday at 10:24 a.m.
According to police investigators, Gardener texted her husband that a man had forced his way into their home after she answered the door. She also sent her husband a photo created with AI that appeared to show a man lying on their couch, covered by a blanket. The husband then called 911 to report the possible break-in.
Eight marked police vehicles with emergency lights on and sirens sounding, responded and found the couple sitting on a couch with a cell phone mounted on a tripod aimed at the front door.
According to police, Gardener admitted to sending the messages and photo to her husband as a prank. She told police she had used artificial intelligence to generate an image of an intruder.
She was charged with making a false statement concerning an emergency or crime and providing a false statement to police. She was arrested Friday and released on a $10,000 unsecured personal bond.
Calling 911 to report a false crime is illegal. False reports, sometimes referred to as ‘swatting calls’ trigger a large police response, waste valuable emergency resources and can put lives at risk, according to police.
