Parks Department Looks for Public Input on Converting Tennis Courts to Pickleball Courts

Montgomery Parks looks for public input about plans to convert two tennis courts at East Norbeck Local Park to six pickleball courts.

The project aims to increase pickleball opportunities in the county, according to Montgomery Parks. Currently, Montgomery Parks has over 75 shared pickleball/tennis courts but only eight dedicated pickleball courts.

“Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in the nation and here in Montgomery County,” Director of Montgomery Parks Mike Riley said in a press release. “While Montgomery Parks has a strong inventory of shared pickleball and tennis courts, we need to increase the number of dedicated pickleball courts to accommodate the demand.”

Montgomery Parks chose East Norbeck Local Park for a few reasons. The location of the park is far enough away from homes that there will be minimal noise issues. The park is accessible by public transportation and has ample room for parking. Additionally, the courts are lit and ADA accessible. Montgomery Parks hopes a dedicated hub of six courts could accommodate tournaments in the future.

Those worried about the loss of tennis courts can rest assured, there are 18 tennis courts within five minutes from the site at Olney Manor Recreational Park. In total, Montgomery Parks has an estimated 300 tennis courts throughout the park system.

Those interested in submitting feedback can do so through an online Open Town Hall through Friday, June 2. A complete list of pickleball courts is available on the Montgomery Parks website.
