Police: Hit-And-Run Suspect Spat On, Tried to Kick and Bite Officers

Police said a man got into an altercation with officers in Takoma Park as he was being arrested in a reported hit-and-run.

Nelson Gerardo Pereira, 44, of Washington, D.C., was arrested for first-degree assault, hit-and-run, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest, according to the Takoma Park Police Department.

Police said Pereira spat on officers, kicked at them, and tried to bite them. According to police, at about 3 a.m. Monday, officers were dispatched to the 7100 block of Garland Avenue for a reported hit-and-run. The victim told officers he was intentionally hit by someone — who police said was later identified as Pereira — at a gas station on New Hampshire Avenue.

The victim reported he followed Pereira to Garland Avenue after the collision. Officers found Pereira in his vehicle and tried to get his attention, police said. He eventually exited his vehicle but resisted arrest and got into a physical altercation with officers. According to police, Pereira “spat on them, kicked at them, and even attempted to bite their hands.” He was arrested, according to police.
