An 18-year-old driver was arrested for carrying an unauthorized firearm Wednesday.
Montgomery County police said they were patrolling the White Oak area in Silver Spring when, during a routine traffic stop, the 18-year-old admitted to having a loaded handgun.
The driver was arrested on the scene and the weapon was taken into police custody.
The suspect, who is prohibited by law due to age from possessing a handgun, was charged with firearm-related offenses.
Under Maryland law, a person must be 21 years of age or older to buy, own or possess a handgun unless he or she is a member of the United States armed forces, National Guard or holds a job in public safety that requires use of a firearm.
The suspect’s identity has not been released.
