Residents Warned of Elevated Fire Risk

There was a 1.5-acre brush fire Tuesday night in Montgomery Village, and residents are warned of elevated fire risk during current weather conditions.

According to the National Weather Service, gusty winds and low humidity will lead to elevated risk for wildfire spread through Wednesday evening in areas including Montgomery County.

Firefighters were dispatched to the Montgomery Village brush fire Tuesday around 8:30 p.m. and the fire was extinguished by 11:30 p.m., according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer.

It was in a limited-access area near The Heights of Stedwick neighborhood around Great Seneca Creek. The fire involved grass, brush and trees, according to Piringer. Firefighters extinguished the fire using floating pumps and water from a nearby creek.

Separately, there was a barn fire and collapse on Haviland Mill Road near the Brookeville area in which the fire spread to nearby vegetation and brush. Piringer stated there were no reported injuries.

Piringer tells residents to be careful with open flames Wednesday and that fires can spread rapidly with dry conditions and winds. If someone sees smoke or fire in a brush or wooded area, he advises they should call 911.
