Board of Education Races

Montgomery County voters will elect three nonpartisan members to the Board of Education in November. The top two vote-getters in the May 14 primary for the at-large, District 2 and 4 races will advance to the general election.

Two At-Large members, who may live anywhere in the county, and five members who must reside in the districts they represent, compose the Board of Education. The terms stagger, with the election of one At-Large member and two or three district members every two years. All voters, regardless of the district they live in or party affiliation, may vote for one At-Large candidate and one candidate each for the Districts 2 and 4 this year.

District 2: Candidates seeking this seat must reside in district 2 and include Brenda M. Diaz, Ricky Fai Mui, Rebecca Smondrowski (incumbent), Aby Thioye, and Natalie Zimmerman.

District 4: Candidates seeking the seat must reside in district 4 and include Shebra Evans (incumbent), Bethany S. Mandel, and Laura M. Stewart.

At Large:  Candidates in this race include Lynne Harris (incumbent), Sharif Hidayat, Melissa Kim, Jonathan Long, Fitzgerald Mofor, and Rita Montoya.

Early voting is available from May 2 through May 9 at 14 early voting centers throughout Montgomery County. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. May 14 for the primary election.
