Silver Spring Recreation and Aquatic Center Opens

Downtown Silver Spring has a new recreation center with indoor pools.

The Silver Spring Recreation and Aquatic Center had its grand opening Saturday. It is located at 1319 Apple Ave. The pools will open to the public Sunday.

The four-story center has three pools, two hot tubs, a gymnasium, fitness space, multipurpose rooms and a café. The Montgomery County Sports Hall of Fame is located at the center.

It is the first county recreation center in downtown Silver Spring. The county’s free fitness pass program can access the fitness room, open gym, drop-in activities and the game room, according to the county. Pool access requires a fee or membership, and some classes and programs have a fee.

From the very beginning we always had sort of a pin on the map to make this be our first regional rec center/aquatic center,” County Recreation Director Robin Riley said Saturday.

“People have long felt it’s been a desert over here, in terms of access to facilities — this provides facilities,” said County Executive Marc Elrich.

“This facility is going to serve generations,” said County Councilmember Gabe Albornoz.

“Making sure that we have pools available to young people — particularly young people of color — that’s easily accessible, to teach them about water safety, is crucial, and I’m just so glad we have it here in downtown Silver Spring,” said County Council Vice President Kate Stewart, who is district 4 councilmember representing Silver Spring.

The center is part of a complex and is adjacent to the Leggett senior apartments and Holy Cross Health Partners.

“Bringing all of these things together under one roof is really quite unique, and I think it’s going to be a real success,” said Former County Executive Isiah Leggett.
