Will Jawando’s Montgomery County executive campaign was cleared of alleged wrongdoing by the Maryland State Board of Elections this week, following a review of a complaint filed earlier this year.
“From the start, we said there was nothing here, and after a careful review, the State Board of Elections has confirmed exactly that,” Jonathan Weinberg, field director for Jawando’s campaign, said in a statement Monday.
The state board told Jawando’s campaign in a letter that it closed the investigation after finding insufficient evidence to substantiate the complaint.
“Based upon the information obtained during this inquiry, SBE has not identified sufficient evidence to establish coordination … or any other violation of Maryland campaign finance law,” wrote Internal Audit Supervisor Niyi Awodele.
On June 4, after receiving an anonymous complaint, the State Board of Elections sent a letter to the campaign outlining the complaint’s allegations: that Jawando’s U.S. Senate campaign contributed a total of $115,000 in March and April 2025 to the Working Families Party PAC. That same PAC contributed $72,159 to support his county executive campaign a little over a year later, which led to the complaint. It alleged that the Jawando campaign violated campaign finance laws by coordinating with the Working Families Party PAC, a Brooklyn-based progressive group which has funded candidates in various states. When Jawando’s run for the U.S. Senate ended in 2023 his campaign had funds left over which constituted the $115,000 donation to them in two payments.
Jawando is in a tight race for county executive with Andrew Friedson, Evan Glass and Mithun Banerjee, among several others.
Early voting runs now through June 18. Primary Election Day is June 23.
