Wootton Alum Nominated for Tony Award as Best Actor in MJ the Musical

When Myles Frost was a student at Thomas Wootton High School, he performed a Michael Jackson routine at the talent show. Just a few years later, he is on Broadway, singing and dancing as Michael Jackson in MJ.

On June 12, he just may moonwalk away with a Tony for best actor.

“I remember when we met him. He was certainly very dedicated to his craft,” said his Wootton drama director Jessica Speck. Back then, he was focused on becoming a recording artist and singer, she recalled to MyMCM.

Speck went up to New York in January to see her former student on the big stage. “It was mind-blowing. It was amazing. I couldn’t believe it. I was crying through half of it,” said Speck, who directed Frost in Hairspray his freshman year, Legally Blonde his junior year and Cinderella his senior year.

Frost is her first student who made it to Boardway, said Speck, who now is the drama director at Wheaton High School. She went on to list some of her more successful students in the arts, including one who is the associate director at the Shakespeare Theatre in D.C. and another student who toured the country in regional theater in The Color Purple.

She is excited to watch the Tony Awards on June 12. “This is pretty special.”

Frost’s choir director knew he had outstanding musical talents when she first met him in ninth grade. He already was a good singer, performer, piano player and writer, said Carla Ingram, who now teaches English at Clarksburg High School.

During his high school years, he auditioned to be on television’s The Voice, but didn’t make it past the preliminary rounds, she recalled. He performed in the area, singing rhythm and blues and pop.

While Ingram said she is not surprised that he is so successful, she is surprised that his success came on Broadway.

Frost previously appeared in the film, All In, and sang in the Netflix comedy, Family Reunion. In a 2017 interview in the Wootton school newspaper, Frost said he first started singing when he was 13 and can play the piano, drums, alto saxophone, trumpet and baritone.

MJ racked up 10 Tony nominations, including best musical.
