5 Things to Know Today, Aug. 12 In Montgomery County

Today is Friday, Aug. 12. Here’s the 10 day forecast as we head into the weekend and also, 5 things to know.

1. Agricultural Fair: The 73rd Annual Agricultural Fair opens today at 3 p.m. and continues through Saturday, Aug. 20.

2. Primary Election Update: The Board of Elections meets today at 3:30 p.m. The public may join the meeting on Zoom or sign up to offer public comment. The first item on their agenda is to certify the primary election. Democratic challenger David Blair is expected to request a recount for the county executive race and that may start as early as Thursday, Aug. 18.

3. Single Parent Conference:  Montgomery College is hosting a virtual conference for single parents Saturday, Aug. 13 starting at 9 a.m.  The aim is to connect single parent families to helpful resources.

4. Tax Free Week: Maryland’s Tax free Week begins Sunday, Aug. 14 to help families with back-to-school shopping. Maryland’s six percent sales tax is not collected for qualifying items including clothing, footwear, and some school items.

5. International Food and Craft Festival:  Enjoy great food, crafts, and music from around the world Sunday, Aug. 14 from 1 – 7 p.m. at Veterans Plaza in Downtown Silver Spring.

And One More Thing: The public schools and the health department are vaccinating children ages 6 months to 5 years old for COVID this weekend. Appointments are required and may be made online.
