5 Things to Know Today, Aug. 16, In Montgomery County

Today is Monday, Aug. 16. Mostly cloudy today with a few showers and thunderstorms. Here are five things to know in Montgomery County.

1. Fair Continues: The Montgomery County Agricultural Fair continues in Gaithersburg. It’s Family Day, which means free admission for youth ages 11 and under. Face masks must be worn indoors in the Farm and Garden, Old Timers, Home Arts, Arts Crafts and Photography, 4-H, Chilly Mall, Big Cheese, Ice Cream Parlor, Heritage, all Restrooms, Birthing Center, Poultry Barn, Souvenir Booth, and First Aid buildings.

2. Back to School Immunizations:  In just two weeks on Aug. 30, Montgomery County Public Schools will greet students for the new school year.  Students attending public schools in Maryland must be vaccinated for numerous diseases. Parents are required to submit proof of immunization before the first day of school. Families may contact their doctor for the immunizations, appointments for free immunizations also can be made Monday through Friday in Germantown, Rockville, or Silver Spring locations.

3. Walk up Food Distribution: Stop by Seneca Creek Community Church in Gaithersburg from 2 to 3 p.m. to receive boxed groceries. The groceries will be available near the loading dock on the right side of the building. See more food distribution events here.

4. Municipal Monday: The Mayor and Council of Gaithersburg meet virtually at 7:30 p.m. The agenda may be found here. The Poolesville Town Commissioners meet at 7 p.m. and the agenda may be found here.

5. Pocket Pet Palooza: The fees to adopt a small pet from the county’s adoption center are waived through Aug. 28th.  The shelter, located at 7315 Muncaster Mill Road in Derwood, operates from noon to 7 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. On Saturday and Sunday, the shelter opens at 12 p.m. and closes at 5 p.m.
