5 Things to Know Today, Dec. 16, In Montgomery County

Today is Friday, Dec. 16. Here is the 10 day forecast and 5 things to know today as we head into the weekend.

1. Beach Drive Reopens to Vehicles:  The car-free street schedule for Beach Drive in Montgomery County will no longer be open for recreation and exercise on Fridays starting today. Beach Drive will be open for vehicles on Friday, closed on Saturday and Sunday.

2. County Flu and COVID Booster Vaccine Event:  Flu and COVID booster shots will be available Saturday, Dec. 17 at the Westfield Wheaton mall from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. No appointment is needed.

3. Santa’s Workshop in Burtonsville:  Montgomery County Recreation is hosting Santa’s Workshop tonight from 6 to 9 p.m. Enjoy cookie decorating, a hot chocolate bar, and a movie night featuring “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” at the Marilyn J. Praisner Community Recreation Center. Find more holiday events here.

4. AME Zion Church Restoration:  Half of the proceeds from the National Philharmonic’s two performances of Messiah are being donated to help restore the historic Scotland African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in Potomac. The performances are Saturday, Dec. 17 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 18 at 3 p.m.

5. Hanukkah: Begins at sundown, Sunday, Dec. 18.  Jewish families celebrate Hanukkah by lighting a special Menorah with eight candles plus a ninth shammash candle (server used to light the others).
