5 Things to Know Today, March 18, In Montgomery County

Today is Friday, March 18. Hindus observe Holi, the festival of colors, from sundown on March 17 through sundown today. Here are five more things to know today in Montgomery County.

1. Transit Driver Appreciation Day:  County Executive Marc Elrich will present a proclamation recognizing today as Transit Driver Appreciation Day.  The presentation takes place at 12:30 p.m. at the Silver Spring Bus Depot. This event will be dedicated to celebrating the service of public transit employees and will be streamed live on the @MCDOTNow Twitter account at https://twitter.com/MCDOTNow.

2. Benefit Concerts for Ukraine:  Carpe Diem Arts, a Silver Spring based arts organization will present two concerts to benefit the Ukrainian people. The first concert takes place tonight from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Avalon Theatre in Easton, Md. Next Friday, the 25th, the second concert takes place from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Sandy Spring Museum. 3. Future of Electric Power:  Explore electric vehicles, sample sustainable and plant-based food, recycle gas-powered yard equipment and small appliances, and turn in old light bulbs for up to three free LED bulbs at the Go Electric! showcase. The free event takes place Saturday, March 19 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Rockville Campus of Montgomery College.

4. Gaithersburg’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade: This annual tradition is scheduled for Saturday, March 19 at 10 a.m.  The parade was originally scheduled for last Saturday, but was delayed due to rain and snow.

5. National Cherry Blossom Festival: The National Park Service predicts peak bloom for the Tidal Basin cherry blossoms between March 22 and 26. The National Festival takes place from March 20 through April 17. A list of events can be found online.

And One More Thing: The county is holding four school-based clinics this weekend for pediatric second COVID-19 vaccine and booster shots. Appointments are recommended.
