5 Things to Know Today, May 5, In Montgomery County

Today is Wednesday, May 5 and it’s Cinco de Mayo. On this day in 1862, the Mexican Army was victorious over Napoleon III’s French forces at the Battle of Puebla. Here are five things to know in Montgomery County.

1. Weekly County COVID-19 Briefing: County Executive Marc Elrich, County Health Officer Dr. Travis Gayles and Emergency Management Director Dr. Earl Stoddard will hold their weekly media briefing at 12:30 p.m. You can watch live on MCM channels 21 and 995 (HD), County Cable Montgomery and on the county’s Facebook page and YouTube channel.

2. Choose a Sober Ride: If you’re celebrating Cinco de Mayo, the Montgomery County Police Department reminds you to choose a sober ride.

3. County COVID-19 Testing: Free COVID-19 testing is available throughout the county at nine testing sites today.

4. Wellness Conversation: At 6 p.m., residents are invited to a free, online conversation about “the role that peer support plays in the treatment and recovery process for substance use disorders.” No registration is required. You can join on Teams Live or watch live on County Cable Montgomery and the county’s Facebook page.

5. Senior Planet Montgomery: Senior Planet Montgomery continues to offer free Zoom classes to senior residents. Today’s classes include “Facebook” and “Explore with Google Maps.”

And One More Thing:  Montgomery Community Media and the County Council discuss microaggressions in a special presentation titled #SeeMeMontgomery: Microaggressions. A microaggression is defined as: “A statement, action or incident regarded as an instance of indirect, subtle or unintentional.” Watch the conversation here:
