More than 50 people were arrested in Silver Spring by the Montgomery County Police Department’s Holiday Crime Suppression Task Force in December and January, according to MCPD.
The team of six officers focused on retail theft, robberies and organized shoplifting with goals to deter crime and apprehend offenders.
The initiative spanned from Ellsworth Place to the Orchard Center shopping area on Cherry Hill Road, in partnership with retail stores and businesses.
Officers arrested 44 people for theft, two people for auto theft, and eight people for drug-related offenses. The team also did more than 268 traffic stops, which led to two illegal handguns being recovered.
In a December incident, a man with a loaded handgun was caught by task force officers at the Silver Spring Metro station after he was stopped for fare evasion, according to police.
There were zero reported robberies in the area during the enforcement period and the police department attributes that to the task force.
It is “the first of many targeted enforcement initiatives” planned this year for the police department’s Silver Spring district, according to MCPD.
The holiday task force initiative ended Jan. 10.
