County Executive Marc Elrich announced Friday he accepted the resignation of Montgomery County Chief of Police Marc Yamada, effective immediately.
Elrich thanked Yamada for nearly four decades of service to the Montgomery County Department of Police and county residents.
Assistant Chief Darren Francke will serve as acting chief while the county searches for a permanent replacement, Elrich said.
The county has not released further details on the timeline for naming a permanent chief or the circumstances surrounding Yamada’s departure. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.

“Today, I accepted the resignation of the Montgomery County Department of Police (MCPD) Chief Marc Yamada. We thank him for nearly four decades of service to MCPD and our residents. This resignation is effective immediately, and I have selected Assistant Chief Darren Francke to serve as Acting Chief of Police until a permanent Chief is appointed.”
