The Montgomery County Department of Transportation will host a free, family-friendly “Safety Day” from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 9 at the Carver Educational Services Center located at 850 Hungerford Drive, Rockville.
Informational sessions and demonstrations teaching safe cycling, driving and walking techniques will be led by students as part of the county’s Vision Zero Youth Ambassador program.

For young children, there will be a traffic garden set up with miniature streets that youth can cycle through on two wheelers. The event will also include a bike raffle, music and food trucks.
“As a former teacher, I know high school students are some of the strongest role models for youth, and I applaud their efforts to inspire more young people to be safe using alternative travel modes,” said County Executive Marc Elrich in a statement.
Elrich said the lessons are instrumental to youth safety. The event comes at a time when after-school pedestrian safety has been under scrutiny by local lawmakers following multiple traffic-related injuries and fatalities involving children, including an 11-year-old girl who died after being struck by a school bus.
“Safety Day is an opportunity to make a real impact in pedestrian safety and awareness,” said MCDOT Director Chris Conklin.
The event is co-sponsored by the county’s transportation department, MCPS and Montgomery County Recreation.
Free parking will be available at Montgomery College’s lot 13. There will be shuttle buses from Gaithersburg, Kennedy and Seneca Valley High Schools and Montgomery Village and White Oak Middle Schools.
